Is Holdout really free?

Yes. Download the app and create up to 3 timers for free, with no credit card and no account required. When you want unlimited timers, you can upgrade to premium directly inside the app.

What does Holdout premium unlock?

Premium removes the 3-timer limit so you can track as many purchases as you want. Everything else including the savings tracker, notifications, and stats is available for free.

Does Holdout sync across devices?

Holdout is intentionally offline-only. Your history and timers live only on your device. No server, no cloud sync, no data shared with anyone.

How is Holdout different from just setting a phone reminder?

A reminder just tells you time is up. Holdout makes you write down why you want something before the timer starts, then prompts a conscious decision when it ends. That friction is the whole point.

Does Holdout require an account or internet connection?

No account. No internet. No sign-in. Open the app and use it immediately. Everything stays on your phone.

What if I still end up buying things?

That will happen, and it is fine. Holdout is not about never buying anything. Even resisting 30% of impulse purchases saves the average person over $1,600 a year. The goal is better decisions, not zero spending.

Overview

Holdout is designed with privacy in mind. The app works entirely offline. No account is required and no personal data is sent to our servers. All your timers and savings data are stored locally on your device.

Data stored on your device

Holdout stores the following data locally on your device using encrypted on-device storage (MMKV):

Purchase timers you create (name, price, currency, duration)
Your decision history (resisted / bought)
App settings (language, currency preference)
Total number of timers created (for free tier limit)

Notifications

If you grant permission, Holdout schedules local push notifications to remind you when a timer expires. These notifications are generated entirely on-device. No data is sent to any server to deliver them.

In-app purchases (RevenueCat)

Holdout offers a one-time lifetime purchase processed through Apple App Store or Google Play. We use RevenueCat to manage purchase verification. RevenueCat may collect:

A randomly generated anonymous app user ID
Purchase receipt data (to verify your purchase)
Device locale and platform (iOS / Android)

Analytics

The Holdout website (holdout.me) uses Vercel Analytics to measure anonymous traffic (page views, country). No cookies are used and no personal data is collected.

Third-party sharing

We do not sell, rent, or share your personal data with any third parties for advertising or marketing purposes.

Data deletion

Since all app data is stored locally on your device, you can delete it at any time by uninstalling the app. No data is held on our servers.
